Westindischer OzeanThis species is often seen by snorkellers and usually mistaken for a sea snake. It mimics the venomous sea snakes found living sympatrically in many areas and the colour pattern of the species varies accordingly. In Japan a banded snake eel was photographed. The pacific form is usually fully banded but Indian Ocean populations are often half-banded or have round spots alternating with bands.
