Biosystems at the AALSO UK Workshop
Sep . 25 / 2019

Biosystems, the commercial division of Tropical Marine Centre, was invited to present at the Aquatic Animal Life Support Operators* (AALSO) UK Workshop, held at Chessington World of Adventures. The 2 day workshop was attended by Public Aquarium professionals from across UK and Europe, culminating in Level 1 certification in the Water Quality Technician Programme and Life Support Operator Programme.

The presentation, titled "Optimised Lighting: A primary consideration of Life Support System Design", highlighted the importance of considering Photoperiod, Spectrum and Intensity of the lighting system, as well as the optic biology of the target organisms, to ensure that it provided for their spectral needs and sensitivities. As such, incorrectly lit displays can lead to significant stresses, and lighting should therefore be a primary concern when designing life support systems (all too often LSS design centres exclusively around the components related to water quality). It was great to share the knowledge and experience we have gained over the past 10+ years in LED lighting technology in the open forum of the workshop, and fantastic to end the presentation by showcasing various exhibits that have been illuminated using our Biolumen LED lighting and control systems.

Thanks must go to the AALSO committee for inviting us to sponsor and to be a part of this fantastic event...we look forward to being a part of the next one! Congratulations too to all the attendees who passed their exams!

*AALSO is a nonprofit organization focusing on the education and training of aquatic life support operators around the world, creating a pathway for members to learn about the latest technology in the industry and act as a forum for members to connect and discuss the care of aquatic animals in captivity.
