Western Indian OceanWestern Indian Ocean, ranging into the Red Sea but not known from the Maldives. Usually found at moderate depths over 20m, but occasionally found in the shallows. Adults are readily identified by their unusual combination of colours, being dark but with an almost white back, but is obviously closely related to Halichoeres chrysus. Small juveniles have prominent ocelli in the dorsal fin that show as spots in females. Length to 11cm.
