NOAA’s announced a proposed rule to ban Banggai Cardinals in USA
Aug . 25 / 2023

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has recently proposed the 4(d) rule NOAA–NMFS–2023–0099, which could potentially impose a sweeping ban on the import and export of the Banggai cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni) to and from the United States, irrespective of its origin.

The Banggai cardinalfish holds a special place in our hobby, admired for its captivating beauty and unique behavioural traits. It is worth noting that the majority of Banggai cardinalfish imports into the U.S. and UK are sourced from responsible and sustainable aquaculture farms abroad. We also know that 100% of the Banggai traded by TMC come from Captive breeding. These farms have played a pivotal role in meeting the demands of enthusiasts while concurrently alleviating pressures on wild populations. Over the last decade, the aquarium trade has demonstrated a proactive commitment to the well-being of this species by investing in the establishment of environmentally sound aquaculture facilities, both domestically and internationally.

We invite you to join us woth Quality Marine in raising your voice against this proposed rule. We firmly believe that there exists a more effective approach—one that aligns with the principles of sustainability and responsible stewardship of our aquatic ecosystems. Our goal is not only to safeguard the Banggai Cardinalfish but also to ensure that enthusiasts can continue to appreciate this captivating species in their home aquariums.

Supporting the trade in sustainably aquacultured Banggai Cardinalfish is not just a concept; it's a solution that strikes a balance between our passion for the hobby and our commitment to the environment.
