Western PacificSwims in the open near corals and is usually present when there are long spined sea urchins on the reef. Most family members are striped. The large family comprises about 35 genera and over 100 tiny species, many of which are only a few centimeters long when fully grown. These fishes are particularly numerous in warm-temperate seas where corals are replaced by weeds. Several species have yet to be described.
