Most of the world's 2000 catfish species occur in freshwater. Only 2 families with a small number of species are marine. The Coral Cat is the only common one to be encountered in coral reefs. Juveniles are commonly seen out in the open, feeding on mud, sandy slopes or seagrass beds in dense, ball shaped groups. Large adults are solitary and hide under ledges during the day. Their major food items are small crustaceans, molluscs and fishes.
